The "Great Switchover": Is Your Mount Prospect AC Ready for the 79-Degree Spike?

If you live in Mount Prospect, you know the drill: yesterday you had the furnace on, today you’re reach for the AC, and tomorrow you’ll probably be looking for a light jacket.

This morning’s high of 79°F is the first real stress test for your air conditioning system. Before you head out to the Progressive Pub Experience downtown tonight, take 10 minutes to make sure your HVAC system isn't about to stage a "Spring Breakout" (and not the good kind).

1. The "First-Start" Breaker Trip

After sitting dormant all winter, an AC compressor requires a massive "jolt" of energy to start. If your condenser coils are dirty or the capacitor is weak, it will pull too much amperage and trip your breaker.

  • The 60056 Tip: If you reset the breaker and it trips again, stop. Don't force it. This is usually a sign of a "hard start" issue that can be fixed in 30 minutes by a pro, but forcing it can burn out your $2,000 compressor.

2. The "Winter Debris" Choke

During those heavy Illinois winter winds, leaves and twigs from the trees in neighborhoods like Prospect Manor and Triangle Park often get sucked into the sides of your outdoor unit.

  • The Fix: Before you flip the switch, check the base of your outdoor unit. If there is standing water or a "blanket" of wet leaves around it, your system can't breathe. This causes the unit to overheat on a warm day like today.

3. Humidity & The "Musty Start"

With rain in the forecast for tomorrow (Friday), humidity levels in Mount Prospect are about to climb. When you first turn on the AC, you might smell a "locker room" odor.

  • Why it happens: This is "Dirty Sock Syndrome," caused by mold or bacteria on the evaporator coils that grew during the damp spring transition.
  • Pro Tip: Change your filter today. A fresh MERV-8 filter will catch the spring pollen blowing off the trees near Busse Woods and help neutralize that initial startup smell.

4. Thermostat Confusion

In this "yo-yo" weather, many digital thermostats get confused. If your AC is running but blowing warm air, check that your thermostat isn't still in "Auto" mode with a high heat set-point.
